HA Kim et al

Germanium (Ge) as an alternative to graphite exhibits a fairly high theoretical energy density and improved Li+ ion diffusivity. However, the seriously deteriorated electrochemical performance of Ge during cycling and the difficulty of the preparation of Ge-based nanostructures can hinder the utilization of Ge as an anode. Thus, in this study, a nanocomposite structure with Ge and TiO2 (Ge/TiO2) was synthesized using a facile one-pot method with different ratios of a Ge source with a dominant GeO2 phase and titanium isopropoxide. In particular, the Ge/TiO2 nanocomposite with a proper amount of TiO2 exhibited the improved electrochemical properties, i.e., a coulombic efficiency of 97% and a retention of 61% for 100 cycles, compared to a commercial Ge (a coulombic efficiency of 82% and a retention of 16%).

Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs), which use ethanol as a fuel, have attracted considerable attention due to their relatively high energy density, the non-toxicity of ethanol, and the abundance of ethanol sources. Herein, the doped carbon nanostructures (C/Fe-TMPP and C/Fe-Pc) as cathode catalysts were synthesized using a template method with iron(III) 5, 10, 15, 20-(tetra-4-methoxyphenyl) porphyrin chloride (Fe-TMPP) and iron(II) phthalocyanine (Fe-Pc). C/Fe-TMPP exhibited high performance in the DEFC supplied with high-concentrated EtOH as a fuel at the cathode. The excellent ORR activity of C/Fe-TMPP for the DEFC can be attributed to ethanol tolerance in the ORR and low ethanol adsorption energy of the active sites for the ORR of C/Fe-TMPP.

The Fe/N-doped carbon nanostructure as a NPM cathode catalyst showed the improved ORR activity owing to electrocatalytic active sites such as pyridinic and pyrrolic N states, and Fe-N4 macrocycles. In this study, the degradation mechanism of Fe/N-C during the ORR in an acidic medium was intensively investigated by chemical acid treatment and electrochemical cycling tests in the half and unit cells in different potential ranges. The crystal and pore structures of the sample before and after the durability test were measured and compared using X-ray diffraction method and N2 adsorption/desorption analyzer. Furthermore, followed by the durability test, the surface chemical composition and state of the samples were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

In this study on the design of a cathode for Li-air batteries (LABs), the eddy current of oxygen gas as a fluid can also be found in the gas diffusion layer (GDL) in the cathode fabricated using an imprinting process with micro-scale patterned metal molds. Herein, the cathode with the patterned GDL containing an increased density of carbon paper exhibits increased velocity, vorticity, and inner pressure of O2 flow due to the increased eddy current effect (the inner structuring).

In this study, we proposed high-performance chemically regenerative redox fuel cells (CRRFCs) using NO3-/NO with a nitrogen-doped carbon felt electrode and a chemical regeneration reaction of NO to NO3- via O2. The electrochemical cell using the nitrate reduction to NO at the cathode on the carbon felt and oxidation of H2 as a fuel at the anode showed a maximal power density of 730 mW cm-2 at 80 oC and two-fold high power density of 512 mW cm-2 at 0.8 V, compared to the target power density of 250 mW cm-2 at 0.8 V in the H2/O2 proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs).
